Language assumes shared symbols, shared sounds, shared culture. Mathematics assumes nothing except logic. Any civilization capable of detecting a radio signal, building a vessel, or modulating light has necessarily derived the same arithmetic we have — because arithmetic is not invented, it is discovered. Before any symbol system can work, both parties must demonstrate they share a concept of discrete quantity. A pulse-pause-pulse-pause-pulse pattern (1–2–3) is the most primitive possible signal of mathematical awareness. It cannot be produced by wind, tide, or stellar process. It says only: something here can count.

Prime numbers cannot be generated by any known natural periodic process. A sequence of primes — 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19... — is the clearest possible signal of deliberate mathematical thought. This was the core logic of the Arecibo Message: 1679 bits arranged in a rectangle whose dimensions (73 × 23) are both prime, forcing the receiver to find the correct factorization to read the image. The choice of primes was the first message within the message.

Once counting is established, demonstrate that you can combine quantities. Addition (2 + 3 = 5), subtraction, and multiplication — expressed as pulse-gap-pulse-gap-answer — prove that your mathematics is not rote memorization but structured operation. Freudenthal's Lincos encoded arithmetic as its first semantic layer: before 'hello', teach plus.

Mathematical constants are the same everywhere in the universe regardless of unit system or civilization. π (the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter) is approximately 3.14159... whether you are on Earth or Kepler-452b. Encoding π — or the golden ratio φ (1.618...) or √2 (1.41421...) — is a way of saying: we know the same geometry. We live in the same universe. These are trust signals.

Geometric relationships can be communicated through light, movement, and position before any symbol is agreed upon. Drawing or tracing a circle and indicating its radius and circumference, or arranging three objects in a right triangle and demonstrating the Pythagorean relationship (a² + b² = c²), establishes spatial mathematics that any civilization capable of building structures will have independently discovered. Geometry is the universal drawing board.

Freudenthal's key insight was that once you have established shared mathematics, you can bootstrap language. You teach 'greater than' and 'less than' through arithmetic. From comparison you build logic operators. From logic you build conditionals. From conditionals you can eventually encode behavior, then intent, then the concept of a question. The full Lincos sequence takes an intelligence from counting to something like 'we come in peace' entirely through mathematical scaffolding, with no assumed shared symbol, sound, or culture.

On November 16, 1974, humanity transmitted its first deliberate message to another civilization — a 1,679-bit binary sequence broadcast from the Arecibo radio telescope toward the globular star cluster M13. Every design decision was a lesson in xenolinguistic first principles.
The message has not received a reply. M13 is 25,000 light-years away. A response, if sent immediately upon receipt, would arrive in approximately 50,000 years. We are, in the most literal sense, still waiting.
Every human culture that survived long enough to leave a record developed some version of guest-law. The Xenia of ancient Greece. The Atithi Devo Bhava of Hindu tradition. The Melmastia of Pashtunwali. The sacred guest-right of Norse custom. Arab diyafa. Chinese guanxi in its oldest form.
They arrived at the same principle independently: the stranger who crosses your threshold is temporarily sacred. Not because of who they are. Because of what they survived to get to you.
If something has crossed the void between stars — or between dimensions, or between timelines, or between whatever boundary separates where they came from and where you are — it has endured something we cannot calculate. It is, in any meaningful sense, weary.
The first question is not what do you want? or where did you come from? or are you a threat? The first question is: what do you need?
This is not naïveté. It is the recognition that a being in need is easier to understand than a being on guard. Hospitality before interrogation is not just ethics — it is epistemology.
Every framework humans have for understanding intelligence is built on a single data point: ourselves. This is not a flaw we can fix — it is the condition of being a first-generation intelligence. Recognize it, name it, and hold your interpretations loosely.
Before you ask where they came from, before you ask what they want, before you reach for your instruments — recognize that arrival is exhausting in ways you cannot comprehend. The first obligation is rest, not interrogation. This is not softness. It is strategy. A rested intelligence communicates. A stressed one defends.
When uncertain whether an entity possesses moral standing, extend it provisionally. The cost of wrongly extending dignity to something that does not require it is negligible. The cost of wrongly withholding it is irreversible. This is not sentiment — it is Bayesian ethics under uncertainty.
If a signal exists, it is trying to communicate. This is unfalsifiable and therefore not a claim about physics — it is a heuristic about how to orient attention. Approach every anomalous signal as if it contains meaning you have not yet decoded. This orientation produces better science and better ethics simultaneously.
